▼ Common issues of APP flame retardant applied in fireproof coating

To assist customer to settle issues of APP flame retardant application in fireproof coating. Presafer application team made an extensive research.Here we list several cases for your ref.

Poor flame retardant performance

Possible reasons: 1.Coating contains no flame retardant or low dosage of flame retardant. 2.forumation is not suitable for system. 3.too much fillings,such as titanium pigment, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate,talc,ect.

Film bubbling off after rain washing

Possible reasons: 1.high water solubility of flame retardant(ammonium polyphosphate or pentaerythrite),low water resistancy. 2.Flame retardant coating resin is the same as anti rust painting resin,and low dosage adding, high pigment ratio. 3.base coat and middle coat not match or painting fresh layer before base coating dry.

Whitening or precipitation after rain washing

Possible reasons:1.high water solubility of flame retardant(ammonium polyphosphate or pentaerythrite ),2.Pentaerythrite or ammonium polyphosphate precipitates from coating after rain washing.3,not enough resin,poor film forming property.

Possible reasons:1,resin dosage is low, poor adhesion or low quality. 2, high pigment ratio.3, ammonium polyphosphate has much small molecule. fast hydrolysis, small molecule material make resin degration and efflorescence.

Possible reasons: 1.base coating and fireproof coating not match.2.painting fresh layer before base coating dry, film dropping off in large scale when reach certain thickness. 3.high water solubility of ammonium polyphosphate, degradtion after rain washing then lead to efflorescence,losing original properties.

Film cracking or alligatoring

Possible reasons: 1.resin is fragile, not adding flexibilizer or dosage is not enough. 2.high pigment ratio or single coating is too thick. 3.bad compatibility of ammonium polyphosphate and resin, high oil absorption value. 4.Solvent evaporation rate is not balanced,different surface tension lead to cracking or alligatoring.

Possible reasons: 1.coating may mix some materials that lead to film defect. for example, too much silicone flatting agent, water or foreign matters entered during production,packing barrls contain lubricant oil ect . 2.some materials drop on film surface before it dry. Such as water or oil concentrated in air transmission pipes.
